JACKIE COOPER
Vintage photo, shown in profile, signed at age 12 for collector Saul Goodman
Photograph signed: "Jackie/Cooper". B/w, 8x10. Ink stamp on verso dates signature:
September 1934. Originally a child star, Jackie Cooper (1922-2011) appeared first in Hal
Roach's "Our Gang" comedies, then earned an Oscar nomination as Skippy (1931). He
co-starred with Wallace Beery in several films of the 1930s, including The Champ and
Treasure Island. As an adult, his film opportunities diminished, but Cooper had two hit TV
series in the 1950s, The People's Choice and Hennessy. Cooper had just won the 1974 Emmy
for Best Directing in Comedy for the M*A*S*H episode, "Carry on, Hawkeye". In 1979, he
won another Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the pilot episode of The
White Shadow. Cooper played newspaper editor Perry White in all four of the Christopher
Reeves Superman movies (1981-1987). He also produced several TV programs. Saul
Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and
theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers
offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then,
to sign in fountain pen. Goodman hoped his remarkable collection would remain in
circulation, not gather dust in a library file. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
