Autograph Letter signed: “Jacob A. Cantor” in black ink, 1p, 6x9½. New York City, 31 December 1887. To “Dear Sir” In full: “I shall take pleasure in [one word difficult to decipher] and in your re -appointment./ Sincerely Yours [signature]/ Addressee Allen E”. Jacob A. Cantor (1854-1921) was a lawyer and politician.From 1913 to 1915, he served as a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives.Cantor started out as a reporter for the New York World while simultaneously studying law. He graduated from the City College of New York in 1875, and after being admitted to the bar, Cantor began practicing law. Midway through the 1880s, Cantor embarked upon a political career. After serving in the New York State Assembly (1885-1887), he moved on to the New York State Senate (1888-1898), of which he was President pro tempore from 1892 to 1893. Finally, he was elected as a Democrat to the 63rd Congress, filling the vacancy caused by the resignation of Francis Burton Harrison. Following his time in the U.S. House, Cantor once again took up practicing law and served as President of the New York City Department of Taxes and Assessments. Toned. Corners and edges worn, with several nicks along the right edge and paper loss at upper left-hand corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
