JACOB AUGUST RIIS
Signed autograph letter (1896) forwarding answers to a series of questions
Autograph Letter signed: "Jacob Riis", 1 page, 5¾x9¼ affixed to 7½x10 sheet. New York City, 1896 September 7. On personal letterhead to F. L. Hoffman. In full: "I enclose answers to the questions you put. I have for economies sake put them opposite the type-written questions. [Sheet with questions and answers not included.] The Century Dictionary Cyclopedia of names gives all the information. I have been away, or I should have answered your letter before. I hope the enclosed will be satisfactory. Faithfully yours". Born in Denmark,Jacob Riis (1849-1914) emigrated to the US in 1870, living in poverty for several years until landing a job as a police reporter with the New York Tribune. Covering the worst slums of New York City, Riis decided to devote his career to publicizing the bleak living conditions of the City's poor. His 18-page article, "How the Other Half Lives," was published in 1889. Riis became a skilled photographer, using the new flash bulb technology to reveal scenes which could not have been photographed before. Riis met police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, who would become his lifelong friend. TR later called Riis "the best American I ever knew." Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned at edges. Staple holes at upper left below printing. Mounting corners glued to corners and backing page. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper left corner of backing sheet. Otherwise, fine condition.
