JACOB K. JAVITS
Thie United States Senator signed this typed letter to Norman Thomas, a prominent leader of the Socialist Party
TLS: "J K Javits" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1959 June 25. To Norman Thomas. In full: "Thank you for your recent communication urging my support of the radiation Hazards Act (S. 1628). The Subcommittee on Health of the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, of which I am a member, recently concluded a series of hearings on this bill in which testimony was presented overwhelmingly in favor of its adoption. Legislation such as S. 1628 is urgently needed and you may be sure I shall give it most sympathetic consideration." Jacob K. Javits (1904-1986) was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1947. He remained in that position until 1954 when he defeated Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. to become New York's Attorney General, the only Republican elected statewide that year. He later served four terms in the United States Senate (1957-1981). A close ally of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Javits was a strong supporter of civil rights legislation, and often supported the policy initiatives of Democratic Presidents. Afflicted with ALS ("Lou Gehrig's disease), Javits lost the Republican primary in 1980 and also failed in a Liberal Party bid in the general election for the Senate seat. He received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1983. Norman Thomas was a six-time Socialist Party presidential nominee. Folds, light horizontal fold touches the lower loops of both "J"s. Staple holes at upper left corner, light pencil erasure at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
