JACOB KALICH; DIANA GOLDBERG
3½x5¾ candid photo of the Yiddish theatre actors, on an urban sidewalk.
Photograph signed: "Diana/Goldberg", "Jacob/Kalich". B/w, 3½x5¾. Candid photo. JACOB KALICH (1891-1975) was a star of New York Yiddish theatre, and later a director in that venue and on Broadway. He made some TV appearances in the 1950s and sixties, and played a supporting role ("Yankel") in the film version of Fiddler on the Roof (1971). DIANA GOLDBERG, an actress in Yiddish productions, was the wife of Yiddish theatre producer Irving Grossman (1900-1964), who was on his way to see Diana in a Palm Beach, Florida production of Milk and Honey when stricken with a fatal heart attack. This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Lightly bowed. Corners slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
