In part: "I shall be inspecting with General Wood the coast defense
from June 26th to July 3rd, but shall interrupt this work to go to New
Haven...I would be very glad to take in all the exercises, including those of the
Law School, but I cannot well break the engagement which I have with General
Wood, as a number of arrangements depend upon it." On verso is a draft
ALS: "SEB", Judge Baldwin's reply to Dickinson's letter, dated June 9,
1909. JACOB M. DICKINSON was Taft's Secretary of War from 1909-1911. In November
1908, GENERAL LEONARD WOOD took command of the Department of the East. In April
1910, he was appointed Army Chief of Staff (1910-1914). SIMEON E. BALDWIN was
Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court (1907-1910), later serving as
Governor of Connecticut (1911-1915). The "exercises" referred to were the 1909
commencement exercises at Yale. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
