Signature: “Jacob Romeis/Toledo Ohio” in iron gall ink. 7x1½. Jacob Romeis (1835-1904) was a U.S. Representative from Ohio who attended the public and select schools in Buffalo, New York and later engaged in the shipping business and railroading. He was elected to the board of aldermen of the city of Toledo in 1874 and was reelected in 1876, serving as president of the board in 1877. Jacob was also mayor of Toledo 1879-1885 and was elected as a Republican to the 49th and 50th Congresses (March 4, 1885-March 3, 1889); however, he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1888 to the 51st Congress and engaged in fruit growing near Toledo. He is interred in Woodlawn Cemetery. Lightly toned. Irregular cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
