The two boxers sign a photo of them trading blows in the ring
Photograph signed: "Jake La Motta" and "Eugene 'Silent'/Hairston" B/w, 10x8. Nicknamed the "Bronx Bull" because of his aggressive, charging style, JAKE LaMOTTA (1921-2017)achieved prominence when he won a 10-round decision over Sugar Ray Robinson on February 5, 1943. He and Robinson fought six times, with LaMotta winning only that one bout. On June 16, 1949, LaMotta won the World Middleweight Championship. He defended his title twice, losing it when Robinson knocked him out in the 13th round on February 14, 1951. LaMotta won 83 fights, 30 by knockout, and lost 19, four by knockout (with four draws). He co-authored his autobiography, Raging Bull (1970), which was adapted into the 1981 film starring Robert DeNiro. LaMotta was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990. EUGENE HAIRSTON (b. 1929) was nicknamed "Silent" for a very good reason; he was legally deaf. Because he couldn't hear the bell beginning and ending a round, he asked for a flashing light in the corner, which other boxers found helpful too. This was the only accommodation Hairston needed. As an amateur he won Golden Gloves titles in the lightweight and welterweight divisions, losing only once in 61 fights. As a pro, he went 45-13-5, fighting some of the best middleweights in the sport. His loss to La Motta (by decision) was a grueling 10-round affair. Hairston might have had a shot at the title, but an eye injury ended his boxing career at age 22. Fine condition.
