JAMAICA BROADWAY CAST: RICARDO MONTALBON & LENA HORNE
Two Tony Award nominated cast members sign this Playbill for a presentation of Jamaica at the Shubert Theatre.
Inscribed Show Bill signed: "To Jill, fondest wishes/Ricardo Montalbon" and "Sincerely/Lena Horne", 15 pages, 6x9. Jamaica, a Musical directed by Robert Lewis and starring Lena Horne and Ricardo Montalbon, opened at the Imperial Theater on October 31, 1957 and closed on April 11, 1959. In 1958, the show was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical, Tony Award for Best Scenic Design and Tony Award for Best Costume design. The same year Ricardo Montalbon was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his role as Koli and Lena Horne was nominated for Best Actress in a Musical for playing Savannah (her Broadway debut). RICARDO MONTALBON (1920-2009, born Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban y Merino in Mexico City) is perhaps best known for his role as the suave, mysterious Mr. Roarke on TV's Fantasy Island (1978-1984). Montalban, who played romantic leads in feature films in the 1940s and 1950s, starred in his first "Latin lover" role opposite Cyd Charisse in Fiesta (1947). His other film credits include On An Island With You (1948), Sayonara (1959), The Singing Nun (1966), Sweet Charity (1969), two Planet of the Apes films (1971, 1972), The Train Robbers (1973), Won Ton Ton, The Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (reprising his role on the TV series) and two Spy Kids films (2002, 2003). Montalban also appeared in a number of made-for-television movies as well as on Bonanza and Mission: Impossible in addition to Star Trek. In 1976, he won an Emmy for his portrayal of a Sioux chief in How The West Was Won. Sultry American jazz singer and actress LENA HORNE (1917-2010) began performing at age six and left school at 16 to support her sick mother. She began singing at Harlem's Cotton Club in 1933, where Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington took her under their wings. She later performed with Noble Sissle's Orchestra and Teddy Wilson's big band. Horne won critical acclaim for her performance in Stormy Weather (1943) and for singing the movie's title song. Although she was the first black American woman to sign a long-term movie contract with a major studio (MGM), her films were shot so that her scenes could be cut out before being shown in the South. Horne placed a single, Love Me or Leave Me, in the Billboard Top 20 in 1955 and won two Grammy Awards (1981 for her album Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music and 1995 for her album An Evening with Lena Horne) and was nominated for a Tony in 1958 for her performance in Jamaica (1957-1959). Horne also won a special Tony in 1981 for her one-woman show Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
