The Scottish barrister and politician who served as Speaker of the House of Commons signs this envelope
Autograph envelope signed: "Jas Abercromby" in black ink. 5x3. Postmarked "Jedburgh (Scotland), January 31, 1831". Envelope addressed to "Mrs. Omond/6 Dundas Street/Edinburgh". Coming from a family of military officers, James Abercromby (1776-1858) chose a career in law, specializing in bankruptcy. He was elected to the House of Commons as a Whig, serving 1807-1830 and 1832-1839 (representing Edinburgh in the latter years). His offices included Judge Advocate General (1827-1828), Master of the Mint (1834) and Speaker of the House of Commons (1835-1839). Upon his retirement he was elevated to the peerage as Baron Dumfermline. Toned. Edges irregular and frayed. Lightly soiled. Affixed to larger sheet with pencil notes (unknown hand) in upper right corner. One reinforced binder hole in top right. Otherwise, fine condition.
