ROSE OLLER HARBAUGH, to whom these autographs were written, was a longtime manager and buyer for the book department of the Marshall Field department store in Chicago and organized many successful book signing parties. She also wrote several books, including Eddie Elephant Has a Party (1947) and Favorite Torte and Cake Recipes (1951). JAMES ALOYSIUS FARLEY (1888-1976) was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1932-1940) and Postmaster General (1933-1940) under Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose presidential campaigns he had managed in 1932 and 1936. He held both posts until disagreeing with FDR about running for a third term in 1940, leading to his resigning from both positions that year (Farley remained Chairman of the Democratic Party in New York state, a position in which he served from 1930-1944). After leaving FDR's administration, Farley served as Chairman of the Board of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation of New York until his retirement in 1973. English actor JAMES MASON (1909-1984) earned Oscar nominations for A Star Is Born (1954), Georgy Girl (1966) and The Verdict (1982). Whether playing Brutus (Julius Caesar, 1953), a master spy (North By Northwest, 1959) or a pedophile (Lolita, 1962), Mason could be counted on for a strong performance. In 1939, a husband and wife screenwriting team, Roy and PAMELA KELLINO, wrote and produced  the film, I Met a Murderer, which Roy also directed, casting Mason opposite his wife in the starring roles. This proved unwise. In 1941, Pamela divorced Roy and married Mason. As PAMELA MASON (1922-1996), the actress/writer, who had been born Pamela Ostrer, wrote three subsequent film scripts, co-starring in all three with husband Mason, including Charade (1953). After her divorce from Mason (1964), she made a few more films and had a syndicated film review column. Stage, screen and television actor ADOLPHE MENJOU (1890-1963) was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor for The Front Page (1930-1931 Academy). Known for his waxed black mustache and stylish wardrobe, he usually appeared as a dapper man-of-the world in more than 100 films, including A Woman of Paris (1923), Morocco (1930), Little Miss Marker (1934), Stage Door (1937), A Star is Born (1937) and Paths of Glory (1957). His other films include A Farewell to Arms (1932) and Pollyanna (1960), and Menjou also hosted several TV series, including My Favorite Story (1953-1954) and Target. His 1948 autobiography was appropriately titled, It Took Nine Tailors. The works of Connecticut author JEAN HERSEY include The Shape of a Year, The Touch of the Earth, A Widow's Pilgrimage and The Woman's Day Book of House Plants. FRANCESCA FALK MILLER wrote plays, including Marked Corners (a three-act play based on Abraham Lincoln's years in Indiana) and A Light on Beacon Hill: A One Act Christmas Play, poetry (including Pink Lightning, a Collection of Verse and The Collected Poetry of Francesca Falk Miller) and books, including The Sands: The Story of Chicago's Front Yard (1948, the year this sheet was signed) and Golden Heritage (1950). The works of ROBERT MORSS LOVETT include All Our Years, Selections from Browning, The History of the Novel in England (with Helen S. Hughes) and History of English Literature (with William Vaughn Moody). In 1948, BABETTE HUGHES published The Magic Penny. Her other works include Last Night When We Were Young (1947), Lost and Found: A Daughter's Tale of Violence and Redemption and the play, One Egg. JIMMY SAVO (1895-1960) was a comedian, actor and songwriter. His film credits include Carry on Sergeant (1928), Once in a Blue Moon (1936), Merry-Go-Round of 1938 (1937) and Reckless Living (1938), and he appeared on television on The All-Star Summer Review (1952). Worthy of further research. Minor show through of writing (all legible). Slightly creased and soiled. Irregular edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
