JAMES A. FARLEY. TLS: "J.A. Farley", 1p, 8½x11. New York City, 1940 March 29. On letterhead of the Democratic National Committee to Mr. Bernard D. Keenan, Chicago, Illinois. In full: "Thank you very much for your kind letter of March 18th, regarding my St. Patrick's Day speech. It was thoughtful of you to write me, and I am attaching hereto a copy of the speech, which I thought you might like to read over. With kind personal regards, I am Sincerely yours,". Enclosure not present. Written the year that Farley resigned his positions as FDR's Postmaster General and Chairman of the Democratic National Committee. James Aloysius Farley (1888-1976) was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1932-1940) and Postmaster General (1933-1940) under Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose presidential campaigns he had managed in 1932 and 1936. He held both posts until disagreeing with FDR about running for a third term in 1940, leading to his resigning from both positions that year (Farley remained Chairman of the Democratic Party in New York state, a position in which he served from 1930-1944). After leaving FDR's administration, Farley served as Chairman of the Board of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation of New York until his retirement in 1973. Lightly creased with folds, lower horizontal fold nicks the lower flourish of the "J". Light paper clip impression and nick at upper left blank margin. Fine condition.
