James A. Farley signed this letter, typed on stationery of the U. S. Postmaster General in 1940, to thank the recipient for his kind remarks. Farley was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in the 1930s and Postmaster General under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Typed letter signed "James A. Farley" in green ink. 1 page, 7x9, on stationery of the U. S. Postmaster General. Aug. 15, 1940. Addressed to Mr. Charles B. Whittlesey, Hartford, Connecticut. In full: "Dear Mr. Whittlesey: Many thanks for your kind letter of the 10th, the receipt of which I greatly appreciate. I am grateful to you for your generous remarks. I have received many petter similar to yours and naturally they make me feel very happy. With every good wish, I am Sincerely yours,". Farley (1888-1976) was Postmaster General under Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1940), whose presidential campaigns he had managed in 1932 and 1936. He was also Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (1932-1940), holding both posts until disagreeing with Roosevelt about running for a third term in 1940. He resigned from both positions that year but remained Chairman of the Democratic Party in New York State, a position in which he served from 1930 to 1944. After leaving Roosevelt's administration, Farley served as Chairman of the Board of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation of New York until his retirement in 1973. Lightly toned and creased. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
