at top to an 8½x11 page. New York, N.Y., 1945 November 19. On letterhead
of the Coca-Cola Export Corporation, James A. Farley, Chairman of the Board, to
Captain Ralph E. Ward, Walter Reed Hospital, Washington, D.C. In full:
"This is the first opportunity I have had to acknowledge your letter of
November 13th, and to comply with your request and to comply with your
request for my autograph. You have a very fascinating hobby and I'm sure you
find it interesting to observe the different signatures. I am delighted to know
that you are improving and sincerely hope your recovery will be rapid and that
things will go well with you in the days to follow. With my very kind regards,
Sincerely yours". James Aloysius Farley (1888-1976) was Chairman
of the Democratic National Committee (1932-1940) and Postmaster
General (1933-1940) under Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose presidential
campaigns he had managed in 1932 and 1936. He held both posts until disagreeing
with FDR about running for a third term in 1940, leading to his resigning from
both positions that year (Farley remained Chairman of the Democratic Party in
New York state, a position in which he served from 1930-1944). After leaving
FDR's administration, Farley served as Chairman of the Board of the Coca-Cola
Export Corporation of New York until his retirement in 1973. From the
collection of Frank Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and
squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, who went on
to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the
cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso
(affixing letter to the page). Paperclip indentation at top left. Normal mailing
folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
