The politician and business executive thanks theatre magnate Lee
Shubert for getting him two tickets to South Pacific.
Typed Letter signed: "Jim", 1 page, 8x10¼. New York, N. Y.,
1950 November 24. On letterhead of the Coca Cola Export Corporation to Lee
Shubert, Select Theatres Corporation, New York, N. Y. In full: "This
will acknowledge receipt of your letter of November 15. It is my understanding
that two tickets for the December 27th matinee performance of 'South Pacific'
have been reserved in my name, and I will arrange to have the tickets picked up
not later than the day before. Thank you very much for your courtesy. Sincerely
yours". James A. Farley (1888-1976) was Chairman of the Democratic
National Committee (1932-1940) and Postmaster General (1933-1940)
under Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose presidential campaigns he had managed in 1932
and 1936. He held both posts until disagreeing with FDR about running for a
third term in 1940, leading to his resigning from both positions that year
(Farley remained Chairman of the Democratic Party in New York state, a
position in which he served from 1930-1944). After leaving FDR's administration,
Farley served as Chairman of the Board of the Coca-Cola Export
Corporation of New York until his retirement in 1973. Lee Shubert
(1871-1953) was the eldest of the Shubert brothers who formed the New
York-based theatre empire. Lightly toned. Sticker on bottom right corner.
