Signature: "Jas. A. Gary/PMG/1897", 6½x1½ cut irregularly. James A. Gary (1833-1920), a wealthy textile manufacturer, was U.S. Postmaster General (1897-1898) under President McKinley. A member of the Maryland Republican State Committee (1880-1896), Gary was his party's (unsuccessful) candidate for Governor in 1879. Unrelated ink note (unknown hand) on verso, minor show-through. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
