As US Postmaster General, he signs the appointment of Mina I. James to the office of postmaster at Chester, Windsor County, Vermont, effective from September 21, 1897. James A. Gary (1833-1920), a wealthy textile manufacturer, was U.S. Postmaster General (1897-1898) under President McKinley. A member of the Maryland Republican State Committee (1880-1896), Gary was his party's (unsuccessful) candidate for Governor in 1879. Horizontal and vertical folds - not affecting signature. Lightly toned and soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
