On letterhead of Congress of the United States/House of Representatives to Mr. Danny Franklin, Sunnyslope, Arizona. In full: "Thank you for taking the time to write me about the recent election results. The Fourth Congressional seat is in contest, and if I am not successful in reclaiming the seat, I shall return to law practice in Decatur and try the hustings soon again. The copy of Press Release and letter to Mr. Blackburn which I enclose should be of interest to you. Sincerely yours". Enclosures not present. MacKay was unsuccessful for his bid for re-election in 1966, and he would leave office a month after signing this letter. "Hustings" are places where political campaign speeches are made. James Armstrong MacKay (1919-2004) was a Democratic U.S. Congressman from Georgia from 1965-1967. He had previously served in the Georgia State Legislature (1951-1952, 1955-1964). MacKay, who had been trained as an attorney, was a decorated veteran of WWII, receiving the Bronze Star. Slightly creased with fold, not at signature. Fine condition.
