The author signs a copy of his book, The Covenant
Book signed: "James A. Michener" on title page, 904p, 6¼x9½, hardcover. His novel, The Covenant, Random House, New York: 1980. First public edition: a limited first edition of the book had been privately printed. From the jacket notes: "The main setting of this extraordinary novel is the stunning landscape of South Africa, but vivid episodes also take place in Indonesia, France, Holland and England. The dramatic presentation of actual and fictional characters in a background of historical events is a narrative technique of which Mr. Michener has long been the acknowledged master - and never more powerfully than here...The Covenant is a major novel about people, real and imaginary, caught up in the march of world history...Though not without comic elements, it portrays the wrong decisions made by fundamentally decent people in the serene belief that they are right." James A. Michener (1907-1997), a former naval historian in the South Pacific, was known for his epic novels tracing the roots of his exotic locales and their people. His 1959 novel, Hawaii, which was made into a motion picture in 1966, was nominated for seven Academy Awards. While his later novels, such as Centennial (1974), Chesapeake (1978), and Space (1982) focused on American themes, his tales of foreign settings mesmerized readers. His most famous work, Tales of the South Pacific, won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction and was made into the Tony Award-winning play and Oscar-winning film, South Pacific. In original dust jacket, which is lightly creased. Book is in fine condition.
