JAMES A. SEDDON
Seddon handwrote, signed and dated this letter from the U.S. House of Representatives in 1846 to inform a man that he couldn't recommend his son for admission to West Point
Autograph letter signed: "James A Seddon" as congressman from Virginia, 2 pages, 7¾x9¾, (1 sheet folded, front and verso). House of Representatives, Washington, DC, 1846 Feb.eraury18. Addressed to J.D.G. Brown. Seddon wrote Brown in this letter that he couldn't recommend Brown's son for admission to West Point and instead was recommending Robert Johnson of Richmond, Virginia. He lists his reasons in this letter. Representing Virginia, Seddon (1815-1880) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1847 and 1849-1851. He was a member of the Peace Convention held in Washington, D.C., in February 1861, in an effort to prevent the impending American Civil War. Seddon was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress (1861-1862) before being appointed Secretary of War by Confederate President Jefferson Davis (1862-1865). After the fall of Richmond, Seddon was arrested on May 23, 1865 and imprisoned with other Confederate officials at Fort Pulaski, near Savannah, Georgia. He was released on November 23, 1865. Lieutenant Colonel Notation in purple ink in upper left corner. Burn mark on second leaf of paper with hole (does not touch handwriting). Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Worn and torn and with pinholes along folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
