Seddon handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1879, less than eight months before his death, about the death of "Ex. Gov. Bragg"
Manuscript setter signed "James A Seddon". 1 page, 5x8 ruled paper with embossing in upper right corner. "Sabot Island P.F.", Goochland County, Virginia, Dec. 29, 1879. Addressed to "Wm. Lane" of Chicago. In part: "I have heard and believe Ex Gov. Bragg is dead, but I am not sure of the fact.". Seddon died in Goochland County less than eight months after this letter was dated. Representing Virginia, Seddon (1815-1880) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1847 and 1849-1851. He was a member of the Peace Convention held in Washington, D.C., in February 1861, in an effort to prevent the impending American Civil War. Seddon was a member of the Provisional Confederate Congress (1861-1862) before being appointed Secretary of War by Confederate President Jefferson Davis (1862-1865).
