JAMES WRIGHT
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet who battled alcoholism signs his poem, "The Last
Drunk."
Typed Poem signed: "James Wright", 1p, 8½x11. All six verses of his
poem, "The Last Drunk." James Arlington Wright (1927-1980) won the Yale
Younger Poets Prize in 1956 for his first collection of verses, The Green
Wall. With The Branch Will Not Break (1963), he abandoned traditional
meter for a more experimental poetry. Wright won the Pulitzer in 1972 for his
Collected Poems. The confessional themes of his poetry were
influenced by his friendship with Robert Bly, leader of the self-help Men's
Movement. In 2004, Wright's son Franz won the Pulitzer in Poetry, making the
Wright's the only father/son pair to win a Pulitzer in the same category. An
annual James Wright Poetry Festival in the poet' birthplace, Martin's
Ferry, Ohio, honors his memory. Fine condition.
