JAMES ARNESS
Shown as the world famous cowboy Matt Dillon in an L&M advertisement for Gunsmoke (5½x7).
Inscribed advertisement signed: "To my friend/Clint/Jim Arness" in black ink to the right of a facsimile signature. Color, 5½x7 . Shown in an advertisement as Matt Dillon for Gunsmoke. Printed advertisement continues on verso. James Arness (1923-2011) the older brother of actor Peter Graves, is best known for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon in the long-running TV Western Gunsmoke (1955-1974). The role was first offered to Arness' friend and mentor, John Wayne, who pushed for Arness being cast in the part. Arness also played Zeb Macahan in the MGM TV series, How the West Was Won (1978-1979), and he starred as Jim McClain on McClain's Law (1981-1982). Few of his screen roles were memorable, though one has become an object of cult worship: Arness was cast as the menacingly glowing space alien, described by one character as "an intellectual carrot," in The Thing (1951). Corners creased and rounded. Light serrations on verso. Minor surface scratches. Signature lightly smudged, but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
