JAMES BRANCH CABELL
Author James Branch Cabell signed this typed letter in 1935 thanking
the recipients for their birthday greetings
Typed letter signed "James Branch Cabell". Pencil notations in
upper left corner and on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 6x6¾. April 17, 1935.
In full: "My dear Mr. and Mrs. Kitaif: It was good of you to remember my
birthday, and I am quite properly grateful. At fifty-six one appreciates these
condolences, in themselves, but above all one appreciates the good will which
prompted them. Yours faithfully,". Cabell (1879-1958, born in Richmond,
Virginia) is an American writer who wrote over 50 books during his lifetime, but
is primarily known for the medieval fantasy novel Jurgen (1919).
Jurgen, set in the medieval world of Poictesme, was laden with sexual
symbolism and attacked American manners and institutions. It was considered a
scandalous book at the time of its publication. Cabell was admired by his
contemporaries, including satirists H. L. Mencken and Sinclair Lewis. But his
sophisticated voice fell out of favor during the rise of literary realism in the
1930s. He sometimes considered a pioneer of the fantasy genre and counted
among his later admirers science fiction author Robert Heinlein and fantasy
writer Neil Gaiman. Lightly toned and foxed. Lightly discolored at top edge.
Folded once and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
