of the local Chicago musician's union to President of the United Federation
of Musicians (1940-1958). He used work stoppages effectively to extract
better earnings for his members from the record companies. Even after
stepping down as President, Petrillo dominated the union, heading is civil
rights division, charged desegregating local unions. Films and radio shows
of his era are replete with references to jokes about the need to get Petrillo's
approval. Petrillo Bandstand in Grant's Park, Chicago is named for him. Toned.
