JAMES HAGERTY
Ike's Press Secretary, uses White House stationery to thank a Washington publicity person for sending him a 6¼x4½ photo (a copy of which is included on this 14x9 card). He doesn't much like his image in the photo, though.
Typed Letter signed: "Jim" as Press Secretary to the President, 6¼x9¼ letter, affixed to a 14x9 card. The White House, Washington, 1956 June 14. On White House letterhead to Barbara Norton, Assistant Director, Public Relations and Publicity, The Sheraton-Park Hotel, Washington, D.C. In full: "I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to acknowledge before this the photograph you sent me. Many thanks for your thoughtfulness. If you ever find a chin strap, buy one for me too. Judging from this picture, I sure need one. All my best. Sincerely". Accompanied by unsigned photo (color, 6¼x4½) of Hagerty with an unidentified woman. (Since no thanks are extended on behalf of a spouse, the second person is probably Barbara Norton, who must have retained a copy.)James Hagerty (1909-1981) was an American journalist, reporting on politics for the New York Times and other publications. He was the only White House Press Secretary employed during the administration of President Dwight Eisenhower (1953-1961). This makes him the second longest serving White House Press Secretary in history, second only to the 12 years of Stephen Early (1933-1945). Adhesive residues on corners. Lightly soiled. Light surface creasing on letter. Otherwise, fine condition.
