JAMES CARDINAL GIBBONS
Signed autograph sentiment on a 4x3 card
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Faithfully yrs in JC/James Card. Gibbons",
4¼x2¾ calling card. Printed text on verso identifies Gibbons as the
Archbishop of Baltimore. James Cardinal Gibbons (1834-1921) was a chaplain at
Fort McHenry during the Civil War, supporting the Union despite having been
raised mostly in New Orleans. He became a bishop in 1868, called "the boy
bishop." Gibbons was Bishop of Richmond (1872-1877) and Archbishop of
Baltimore (1877-1921). He attended the First Vatican Council in Rome
(1869-1870), voting in favor of the doctrine of Papal Infallibility. He wrote
several books, including the influential The Faith of Our Fathers
(1876). He was the first Chancellor of the Catholic University of America
(1887). He worked successfully to secure Papal permission for workers to
join labor unions. H. L. Mencken, often severely critical of Christian
ministers, called Gibbons "a man of the highest sagacity." Lightly toned and
soiled on face and verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
