JAMES COX. Typed Letter signed: "James M Cox", 1p, 8½x11. Miami, Florida, 1950 April 5. On letterhead of Miami Daily News to Roy Fitzgerald, President, The Dayton and Montgomery County Historical Societies, Dayton, Ohio. In full: "Nice to hear from you. I follow every article you send to the papers and thank you for helping to keep our columns interesting. The man who conceived the idea of a proper observance in connection with the old courthouse was certainly inspired. Whether I will be back in time remains to be seen. I am complimented to be invited however. Always good wishes. Sincerely." James Middleton Cox (1870-1957) was a U.S. Representative from Ohio (1909-1913) and Governor of that state (1913-1915, 1917-1921). He was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1920, with future President Franklin Roosevelt as his running mate. An advocate of progressive era reforms, Cox also supported the internationalist foreign policy of President Woodrow Wilson, including membership in the League of Nations. He lost to Republican Warren Harding, also of Ohio, who advocated a return to "normalcy." Cox was editor of the Dayton Daily News, and later acquired other newspapers in Atlanta and Miami. Before his death he had expanded into television and radio ownership. The business he founded prospers today as Cox Enterprises, owning newspapers, television and radio stations, and Cox Communications, nationwide provider of broadband service. Soiled, mostly in blank areas. Lightly creased. 1/8x¼-inch nick on left edge. Pinhole in letter "m" of signature.
