JAMES CRESSON
The Broadway producer writes a letter to Theatre World Founder Daniel Blum, wishing him a happy New Year
Autograph letter signed: "Jim Cresson", in blue ink, 6¼x9¾ open flat, 6¼x4¾. In full: "Dear Mr. Blum - I'm sorry to be so tardy in getting this to you - however have just returned from Hollywood, and am trying to get my affairs in order. Among the first of which is to wish you for the coming year. Thank you, once more". James Cresson (1934-2004) was a producer, stage manager, and actor of film and stage. Most famously known for his stage work, he produced several Broadway plays, winning three Drama Desk Awards for The Norman Conquests: Table Manners (1976), The Norman Conquests: Round and Round the Garden (1976), and The Norman Conquests: Living Together (1976). He was also nominated for two Tony Awards: Chicago (1976) and On the Twentieth Century (1978). In addition to his stage productions, Cresson also produced films, most memorably Mame (1974). Daniel Blum (1900-1964) founded Theatre World in 1945, serving as its chief editor until his death in 1964. Aided by Norman McDonald and John A. Willis (his successor as chief editor), Blum also conceived what would become the prestigious Theatre World Awards for promising new actors in the New York stage, Broadway and later off-Broadway as well.
