Typedletter signed: "J D Hodgson" as Secretary of Labor.1 page, 8x10½, on stationery of the Secretary of Labor. Date stamped July 2, 1970. Addressed to Mr. Doug Voegler, Schuyler, Nebraska. In full: "Dear Mr. Voegler: Thank you for your letter and for your best wishes. I am happy to enclose an autographed card for your collection. Sincerely yours,". Hodgson began his tenure as President Richard Nixon's Secretary of Labor on July 2, 1970. Lightly creased. Adhesive residue near top edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition. Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope on stationery from the Office of the Secretary of Labor. Addressed to Mr. Doug Voegler, Schuyler, Nebraska. Lightly creased and rippled. Tape residue on verso (no show-through). Envelope is sealed and empty. Otherwise in fine condition. Hodgson, (1915-2012), was Vice President for Industrial Relations at Lockheed before being appointed President Richard Nixon's Secretary of Labor (1970-1973). During his tenure, Congress passed the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which greatly expanded the responsibilities and power of the federal Department of Labor. He also expanded employment and training programs through the Emergency Employment Act of 1971 to prevent a recession in the wake of the Vietnam War. President Gerald Ford appointed Hodgson Ambassador to Japan (1974-1977). Two Items.
