Born in Chicago in 1928, JAMES DEWEY WATSON earned a PhD in Zoology from Indiana University (1950). Working with English researcher FRANCIS CRICK and others, he proposed the double helix configuration of DNA (1953). In 1962, Watson shared with Crick and another Englishman, Maurice Wilkins, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material." In 1968, Watson became Director of the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory in New York, helping to make it a premier research institution. He was appointed to head the Human Genome Project of the National Institute of Health in 1988. Slightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). Fine condition.
