JAMES DICKEY
Signed autograph quotation, two sentences from his famed novel
Deliverance
Autograph Quotation signed: "James Dickey", 5x3 lined card. In
full: "I went back down to the spillway and stood next to the water for
the last time. I stooped and drank from the river". James Dickey (1923-1997)
worked in advertising for Coca Cola and Frito-Lay's before publishing his first
book of poetry in 1960. His 1965 collection, Buckdancer's Choice, won
the National Book Award, and he was appointed Poet Laureate of the Library
of Congress the following year. Despite his distinguished career as a poet,
Dickey is perhaps best known for his 1970 novel, Deliverance,
quoted here, which pitted four "city slickers" against nature and the
violent instincts of man in backwoods Georgia. Dickey later wrote the screenplay
for the 1972 film version, which was nominated for three Academy Awards,
including Best Picture and Best Director (John Boorman). Fine
condition.
