Murdoch (1811-1893) was also an elocution teacher and theorist, the author of several books on the subject including, A Plea for Spoken Language. During the Civil War, Murdoch, himself an invalid, entertained wounded Union soldiers with patriotic readings and made benefit performances to fund their care. Irregularly trimmed.
