JAMES EARL RAY
Convicted assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr. signs his excerpt from his USA Today interview
Typed Excerpt signed: "James Earl Ray", 1 page, 8½x11. Headed: "Interview: James Earl Ray/Topic: King's Assassin". An excerpt from his "USA Today" interview. In part: "USA TODAY: What are your feelings about blacks? RAY: I don't get into all that race stuff. I never was involved in it before I got this charge against me...USA TODAY: King preached non-violence. Do you think violence is the way to change things? RAY: Apparently, the government thinks it pays off, because we've been at war almost continuously since 1941...." Ray then comments about extradition, in part: "Any country can demand your extradition, and technically some country like Sweden or Iran could ask to extradite me to their country, since I've never been tried in the United States...." James Earl Ray (1928-1998), apprehended in London, admitted to the 1968 killing of Martin Luther King, Jr. No trial was held, and Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later recanted his admission of guilt and, supported by Dr. King's family, sought a trial. He died in prison in 1998. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
