JAMES EWING "CHRISTOPHER CRAYON" RITCHIE
He complains that having to read and review "such rot" has given him a "severe attack of diarrhea!!!"
Autograph Letter signed: "J Ewing Ritchie", 1 page, 4½x7½. No place, no date, but docketed on verso "Sept. 29, 1891". To "Dear Mr. Fisher", in full: "I send the last file of my review of 'Those Other Animals!' [Item not included.] I ought to have sent it with the other yesterday. The fact you have sent me such rot to read means that I have become for the time an imbecile and have since a severe attack of diarrhea!! Yours truly". James Ewing Ritchie (1820-1898) was an English travel writer and political biographer. He wrote seven books about London, and others about his "rambles" in Australia and South Africa. His biographies included The Real Gladstone (1898). Ritchie sometimes used the pen name "Christopher Crayon." 2" tear at top edge. Small holes at top edge. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly creased. Soiled at verso. Ink note (unknown hand) at verso (no show-through). Otherwise, fine condition.
