Typed Letter signed: "Jim Battin" as U.S. Congressman, 1 page, 5¼x8. Washington, D.C., 1967 August 7. On letterhead of the Congress of the United States and addressed to Mr. Robert A. Smith, New York, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of August 6th in which you request my autograph for your collection which will be displayed in Independent Lodge #185, F. & A.M. Pursuant to this request, I am only too happy to set my official signature to this letter. Sincerely yours," James F. Battin (1925-1996) was born in Wichita, Kansas. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and graduate of the George Washington University School of Law, he practiced law in Montana and served in several judicial positions in Billings, Montana. Battin was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from Montana and served from January 3, 1961 until his resignation on February 27, 1969. He then served as United States district judge, and later, chief judge for the District of Montana. Normal mailing folds. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
