Sheet signed by Iowa politicians James Falconer Wilson and William Boyd Allison in 1884
Signatures: "James F.Wilson,/Iowa" and "WB Allison/Iowa/Decr 23/84". Black ink notations below and lead pencil notations above Wilson's signature, both in unknown hand. 7½x4½ with scalloped top, right and bottom edges. Republican politician WILSON (1829-1895) was a lawyer and member of the Iowa state senate and assembly and a delegate to the state's constitutional convention before serving as U. S. Representative from Iowa's 1st Congressional District (1861-1869) and U. S. Senator from Iowa (1883-1895). After the American Civil War, he was a Radical Republican who supported civil rights for blacks and opposed President Andrew Johnson's attempts to veto the Civil Rights Act of 1866 and the Reconstruction Acts. Wilson was also one of the manager's appointed by the House of Representatives to handle Johnson's impeachment. ALLISON (1829-1908) was a U. S. Representative (1863-1871) and U. S. Senator (1873-1908) from Iowa. He co-sponsored the Bland-Allison Act in 1878, which restored the silver dollar as legal tender, and helped to pass the Hepburn Act, a railroad rate regulation bill, in 1906. Lightly toned. Discoloration along top, right and bottom edges, which touch bottom edge. Bottom left corner is missing. Neatly torn from binding at left edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
