JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
James Fenimore Cooper signs a check for $50.00 to himself.
Partly PrintedCheck signed: "J. Fenimore Cooper", 5½x2. Cooperstown, 1837 October 19. Check number "19". Drawn from the Cashier of the Otsego County Bank, payable to "Self" or Bearer for "Fifty" dollars. In 1811, Cooper (1789-1851) received an inheritance of $50,000 and became a free-spending wealthy gentleman. By 1819, his fortune was gone and he was heavily in debt. To recoup his losses, Cooper speculated in land, invested in a frontier store and, in 1820, began writing the fiction that eventually brought wealth and world fame. The Spy, published in 1821, was followed by a series of five novels known collectively as The Leather-Stocking Tales: The Pioneers (1823), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841). The author added "Fenimore" to his name in 1826 to keep his mother's name alive. Stamped "Paid at the Otsego Co. Bank", touching "J." and the "Fenim" in signature. Interior fabric is stained above check. Fine condition. Leather folio, overall size: 21x13.
