JAMES FENIMORE COOPER
James Fenimore Cooper fills out and signs a check for $70.00 to Moses Lippitt.
Partly Printed Check filled out and signed: "J. Fenimore Cooper", 6x2½. Cooperstown, "Dec. 27th [18]44". No. 103. Payable to "Moses Lippitt, on order" for "Seventy" [dollars]. The printed phrase, "or bearer" has been inked out. In 1811, James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) received an inheritance of $50,000 and became a free-spending wealthy gentleman. By 1819, his fortune was gone and he was heavily in debt. To recoup his losses, Cooper speculated in land, invested in a frontier store and, in 1820, began writing the fiction that eventually brought wealth and world fame. The Spy, published in 1821, was followed by a series of five novels known collectively as The Leather-Stocking Tales: The Pioneers (1823), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Prairie (1827), The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841). The author added "Fenimore" to his name in 1826 to keep his mother's name alive. Endorsed on verso by Moses Lippitt. Bank stamp touches the "J" and "Feni" of signature and "order" of payee line. "r" of "Cooper and date "44" are slightly smudged, and there are other nail head sized ink stains.
