JAMES FORD RHODES
Historian James Ford Rhodes wrote this letter to arrange a lunch date with the recipient.
Autograph letter signed "Jame F. Rhodes". Pencil notations on verso of letter. 2 pages, 5x6¼, 1 sheet folded, front and verso. Dated "Aug 14". In full: "Dear Mrs. Sedgwick Mrs. Rhodes has fixed the hour of luncheon next Monday at 12.45 when we are to have the pleasure of Mr. and Mrs. Storrow's, your and Mr. Sedgwick's company. We get started for the walk at two. When we return from the Cliffs the Buckboard will take you to your domicile. We had a good time at your hour to day [sic]. With Kind regards Very truly yours". American historian Rhodes (1848-1927) is the author of the seven-volume History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850 (1893-1906), as well as the one-volume History of the Civil War, 1861-1865 (1917), which won him the Pulitzer Prize for History. Rhodes was educated at New York University between 1865 and 1867, but never earned a degree. Much of his knowledge of American history came after 1885, when his fortune from coal and iron allowed him to retire. Rhodes' work, which singled out both slavery and the abolition movements as the cause of the Civil War and blasted corruption in the South during Reconstruction, was praised for its lack of bias but was attacked by those with firsthand knowledge of Reconstruction. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Show-through touches signature and body of letter. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
