As US Senator, he signs a typed letter supporting emergency aid for a school in his state.
Typed Letter signed: "Jim", 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1973 June 8. On letterhead of Senate Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs to Herman Goldberg, Associate Commissioner, Bureau of Equal Educational Opportunity, Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington, D.C. In full: "I have recently been contacted by the Andes Central Public School in Lake Andes, South Dakota concerning its application for funds under the Emergency School Aid Act. This letter is to respectively urge you to give the Lake Andes School application your serious consideration. Thanking you in advance for your cooperation, I remain Sincerely". James Abourezk, a Democrat from South Dakota, served one term in the US House (1971-1973) before becoming the first-ever Arab-American in the US Senate (1973-1979). (His parents were Lebanese Christians.) As Senator, he was outspoken on issues affecting American Indians, chairing the Senate Select Committee on Indian Affairs. Abourezk did not seek re-election. As a private citizen, Abourezk has been highly critical of Israel and of US support for Israel. Fold creases not near signature. Staple holes at upper left corner. Received stamp at lower middle.
