JAMES GILES HAMPTON (1814-1861) was a congressman from New Jersey. A member of the Whig party, Hampton served in the U.S. House from 1845 to 1849. After graduating from Princeton College, he was admitted to the bar in 1839. From 1841 to 1844 he functioned as collector of the port of Bridgeton, New Jersey. After leaving Congress, Hampton recommenced practicing law and was even solicitor of the Board of Chosen Freeholders of his native Cumberland County in 1852. WILLIAM L. GOGGIN (1807-1870) represented Virginia as a Whig. He ran for Governor of Virginia in 1859, losing to John Letcher. In 1861, he was a delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention. Once the American Civil War commenced he was named captain of Home Guards for the Confederate Army. Often cited as the first Jewish Congressman, LEWIS CHARLES LEVIN (1808-1860) was a Know-Nothing proponent and anti-Catholic activist and organizer. He represented the state of Pennsylvania from 1845 to 1851. Well known for spearheading the anti-alcohol movement in Philadelphia, Levin was also the leader of what eventually came to be called the Native American Party, a short-lived nativist political organization. After leaving Congress, Levin continued to promote the interests of the Know-Nothing Party until his mental health deteriorated and he was committed to the Philadelphia Hospital for the Insane, where he died in 1860. GEORGE ASHMUN (1804-1870) was a Whig member of the U.S. House representing the state of Massachusetts. He served in both the Massachusetts House and The Massachusetts Senate before being elected to Congress in 1844. An opponent of the Mexican-American War, he left Congress in 1851 and established a law firm with Reuben A. Chapman: Chapman & Ashmun. JASPER EWING BRADY (1797-1871), a lawyer and Whig from Pennsylvania, was a member of the 30th Congress, but was unsuccessful in his re-election bid in 1848. From 1861 to 1869, he was a clerk in the War Department in Washington D.C. RICHARD SPAIGHT DONNELL (1820-1867) was a Whig congressman from North Carolina. During the American Civil War he served as speaker of the North Carolina General Assembly and worked to help ensure the state was war-ready. Although he was elected to Congress in 1866, following the war he was denied entrance by the Radical Republicans and shortly after died in a U.S. Army detention center in his hometown. WILLIAM T. LAWRENCE (1788-1859) served in the U.S. House as a member of the Whig party. Prior to his career as a politician, he was involved in the mercantile business and served in the War of 1812. Toned. Light show-though of the ink on both sides to the opposite sides. Right edge irregular from being neatly torn from album. Otherwise, fine condition.
