Known as "The Godfather of Soul", James Brown (1933-2006) was one of the figures most responsible for turning R&B into soul - and turning soul into the funk of the late 1960s and early 1970s. His hits included "Please, Please, Please", "Try Me", "Good Good Lovin'", "Night Train" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag". Brown, who won Grammy Awards in 1965 ("Papa's Got a Brand New Bag") and 1987 ("Living in America") as well as a lifetime Grammy in 1992, was among the first inductees of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986).
