The two turn-of-the-century United States senators sign their names and states in black ink
Signature: "James H. Kyle/ So. Dakota" in black ink. April 7, 1900. On verso: "Geo. L. Wellington/ Md." in black ink. December 14, 1899. JAMES H. KYLE (1854-1901) was one of the most successful members of the Populist Party, serving for ten years as a member of the United States Senate for South Dakota (1891-1901). After studying to be a congregational minister and practicing in both Utah and South Dakota, Kyle was urged into politics, and ran as an independent joining the emerging Populist Party before its disintegration, after which he switched to the Republican Party. He is remembered for his support for the holiday Labor Day, as well as an advocate of the controversial Spanish-American War. GEORGE L. WELLINGTON (1852-1927) was a United States Senator from Maryland (1897-1903) and Representative of Maryland. He is best remembered for his formal withdrawal from the Republican Party in opposition to President McKinley, and his support of the Progressive Party, ultimately leading to the end of his political career. Irregularly cut. Edges soiled. Toned. Ink notes in unknown hand throughout. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
