JAMES HARLAN. Signature: "James Harlan/Iowa", 6¾x¼, affixed to 8½x11 sheet. Name and birth and death dates in ink (unknown hand) at upper margin, pencil notes (unknown hand) at lower left margin of mounting sheet. James Harlan (1820-1899) entered the U.S. Senate as a Whig from Iowa in 1855. He served until 1857, when he was reelected to fill the seat as a Republican. Harlan remained in the Senate until 1865, when he was appointed as President Andrew Johnson's Secretary of the Interior. Harlan served in the post from May 15, 1865 until his resignation on July 27, 1866. He then returned to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1867-1873, during which time he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Vice President (1868). From 1882-1885, Harlan was presiding judge of the Court of Commissioners for the Alabama Claims. Harlan, a former school teacher and attorney, had previously served as President of Iowa Wesleyan College (1853-1855). He was also the father-in-law of Robert Todd Lincoln. Signature sheet is lightly soiled, shaded at blank right margin. Mounting sheet is lightly creased. Minor smudges at pencil notes, slightly soiled at blank areas, minor mounting stains on verso (no show through). 3 file holes at blank left margin. Fine condition.
