Autograph Envelope Fragment, initialed: "L. H.", 3¾x2¼ slip,
affixed to 6½x3½ card. Pencil and ink note (unknown hand) on mounting card:
"addressed by/Leigh Hunt". In full: "Rev. James White,/3 Upper George
Street/Montague Square". James Henry Leigh Hunt (1784-1859),
the son of British Loyalists returned to England after the American Revolution,
was a playwright, a drama and literary critic and a newspaper editor, but
primarily a poet. He His first volume of poetry was published in 1801, his
most famous opus, The Story of Rimini, in 1816. A friend to all
the Romantic poets, Leigh Hunt was visited in prison by Lord Byron, where he was
confined for two years for criticism of the Prince Regent. His autobiography was
published in 1859, the year of his death. Envelope fragment and mounting card
both lightly soiled. Latter has a nail head sized hole near left edge. Mounting
adhesive shows through lightly.
