Stoddart", 3x1½ Affixed to a 7x10¼ sheet bearing his printed image. James Henry "J. H." Stoddart (1827-1907), born in Yorkshire to an acting family and on stage from childhood, came to the U.S. in 1854 as a member of Wallach's Company. The temperamental Stoddart changed companies several times, performing with Laura Keene and with the Palmer Company. Stoddart first established himself as a skilled "low comedian," especially praised for his "Don Whiskerando" in The Critic. After his success as the rascally innkeeper Pierre in Rose Michel, he began to take on villainous roles. He also published a memoir, Recollections of a Player.
