JAMES HINTON
He pens a letter in regards to the order of books in which he would like to be represented by, dated in 1871!
Autpgraph Letter Signed: "James Hinton.", 2¼p, 3¾x6. 18 Saville Row, W., 1871 August 25. To "Dear Mr Youmans". In full: "Thinking over our talks I think it is best to let you know that my [two words illegible] most clear that this quite habitual to any true representation of me that my former books- Man & His Dwg Place [illegible] - should be placed before any [three words illegible] any future works of mine are to be first. If I am to be [illegible] in America I must make it an absolute [illegible] (So far as any [illegible] of mine in America) that Man & D.P. should be one of the books. Without it I should be essentially misrepresented. I [word crossed out] must make it a [illegible] to get it [three words illegible] of some American firm. Yrs [illegible]". Hinton had published Man and His Dwellingplace (sic) in 1859. British surgeon James Hinton (1822-1875) began his career as an author with a series of papers on physiological and ethical subjects in the "Christian Spectator". He would go on to write additional papers, such as "Physiological Riddles" and a series published as "Thoughts on Health", as well as such books as The Mystery of Pain (1866) and The Place of the Physician (1874). Hinton is also known for being indirectly - and unfairly -- associated with the murders of Jack the Ripper, largely because of his association with Sir William Withey Gull, whose name was brought forward as a suspect in the gruesome "Ripper" murders. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Nicked at upper and lower blank margins and mid-vertical fold. Slightly soiled. Minor show through of ink. Otherwise, fine condition.
