Sale Price $1,275.00

JAMES J. CORBETT. ALS: "Jas J Corbett", 1 p, 5x6¼. Hotel
Palliser, Calgary, Alberta, no date. To Kendrick. In part: "I will
do what I can for your wife Clara but you know it's a hard job. However I
will go after Sennett when I am out there. If I should happen to be in San
Mateo I will look up your Aunt...." In 1892, JAMES J. CORBETT
(1866-1933) defeated John L. Sullivan in a 21-round decision in New Orleans to
become the World Heavyweight Champion. It was the first title bout in which
boxing gloves were used. Corbett was champ until 1897 when Bob Fitzsimmons
won a 14-round decision in Carson City, Nevada. The dapper and articulate
Corbett, known as "Gentleman Jim", appeared on vaudeville stages and in several
films of the 1920s. The "Sennett" whom Corbett promises to "go after" on behalf
of Clara while in California was probably comic silent film director MACK
SENNETT. Lightly creased, lightly soiled. ¼-inch stain touches one letter in
text. Pencil erasure at blank upper margin. Overall, fine condition.
