First heavyweight boxer to win the title with gloves on.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To/My friend/Seymour Halpern/with best regards/Jas J Corbett/Mar 30-30". Sepiatone, 8x10. In 1892, JAMES J. CORBETT (1866-1933) defeated John L. Sullivan in a 21-round decision in New Orleans to become the World Heavyweight Champion. It was the first title bout in which boxing gloves were used. Corbett was champ until 1897 when Bob Fitzsimmons won a 14-round decision in Carson City, Nevada. The dapper and articulate Corbett, known as "Gentleman Jim", appeared on vaudeville stages and in several films of the 1920s.SEYMOUR HALPERN (1913-1997), who had served as a staff assistant to New York City Mayor LaGuardia (1937), later served as a liberal Republican Congressman from New York (1959-1977). One of the few Republicans to be elected from the city, he represented a Queens district that was about 10% Italian. Halpern had begun collecting autographs as a teenager.Slightly nicked and soiled at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
